How to Sell Your Old Phone for the Best Price
IndiaWish Team · Selling · 4 min read

The best price for an old phone comes from three things: a phone that is clean and reset, a price that matches the market, and an ad with clear photos and honest details. Selling directly to a buyer near you usually gets you more than an exchange offer, and it takes about an hour of work.
This guide walks you through every step, from backing up your data to handing the phone over safely.
1. Back up everything first
Before you touch the reset button, make sure nothing important stays on the phone.
- Android: Settings → Google → Backup, and turn on backup for photos in Google Photos. Check that WhatsApp chats are backed up (WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup).
- iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now, or back up to a computer.
- Copy anything else you need: documents in the Downloads folder, voice recordings, and the 2-step verification apps you use for banking or email. Move those authenticator codes to your new phone before you reset the old one.
2. Sign out and reset the phone
A phone that is still locked to your account cannot be used by the buyer, and a phone that still has your data puts you at risk.
- iPhone: Settings → your name → Sign Out (this turns off Find My and Activation Lock). Then Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
- Android: remove your Google account first (Settings → Accounts / Passwords & accounts → Google → Remove account). This avoids Factory Reset Protection locking the buyer out. Then Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). Samsung phones also have a Samsung account to remove.
- Take out your SIM card and memory card.
Never hand over a phone that is not reset, even to a buyer you trust. A factory reset takes ten minutes and protects your photos, banking apps and accounts.
3. Find the right price
Look at what the same model sells for near you, not the price it was launched at.
- Search for your exact model, storage and colour on IndiaWish, for example on the used phones in Hyderabad page, and note the prices of phones in a similar condition.
- Use the IndiaWish valuation calculator for a quick estimate.
- Adjust for what you have: original box and bill, charger, warranty left, and battery health all add value. Scratches, a replaced screen or a weak battery bring the price down.
Set your price a little above the lowest you will accept, so you have room to negotiate. A price that is fair for the condition sells within days; one that is far above the market just sits.
4. Clean it and take good photos
Buyers decide from photos. Wipe the screen and body with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and remove old screen guards if they are cracked.
- Shoot in daylight near a window, on a plain table.
- Take the front (screen on), the back, all four sides, the camera lenses, and any scratches up close.
- Add a photo of the box, bill and accessories if you have them.
- Take a screenshot of the battery health screen (iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health) to show buyers.

5. Write an honest ad
A good title has the brand, model, storage and colour: "iPhone 13, 128 GB, Midnight, 89% battery". In the description, list:
- How old the phone is and whether you are the first owner
- Battery health or how long it lasts in a day
- Any repairs, replaced parts or scratches
- What is included (box, charger, bill, cover)
- Warranty left, if any
Honest ads get fewer time-wasting chats and fewer arguments when the buyer sees the phone. Post your ad on IndiaWish for free.
6. Meet the buyer safely and get paid
- Meet in a busy public place, such as a mall or a café, in daylight. Take someone with you if you can.
- Let the buyer check the phone: calls, camera, charging, Face ID or fingerprint.
- Take payment before you hand over the phone. Cash or a UPI payment that you can see has arrived in your bank app is best.
- You never need to enter your UPI PIN or scan a QR code to receive money. Anyone asking you to do that is trying to take money from you. Read more in our guide to avoiding buying and selling scams.
- Give the buyer the bill (it helps them with warranty) and keep a photo of it for yourself.
